Ground Turmeric (Haldi)


Used for centuries in India and China, haldi is known to have a surprisingly wide range of properties that help with healing and good health. A pinch of turmeric mixed in a cup of hot milk is a popular nuskha or home remedy to fight a cold. Dabbed on an external wound, its anti-inflammatory properties can help heal wounds. It’s also good for digestion, joint pain, and liver conditions. In recent times, turmeric’s main component curcumin was found to possess properties that treat cancer. This humble spice is definitely a treasure trove of health benefits.

The internet is full of some fantastic recipes using different spices. What could be better, eating delicious food and getting health benefits at the same time.

Turmeric Tea

Turmeric tea’s strong anti-inflammatory properties can help ease the painful symptoms in people with arthritis. One study found that an active compound in turmeric, called curcumin, was effective in reducing pain in patients with osteoarthritis. and it is really easy to make:

4 cups water
1 tablespoon ground turmeric
lemon (optional)
honey (optional)
Ginger (optional)

Bring water to a boil. Reduce heat and add ground turmeric. Simmer for 10 minutes.

Strain into a mug using a mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

Add honey and/or Lemon and for some extra zing and health benefits add some ground ginger.


Store your haldi powder in a cool, dark space. Keep it in a tightly closed container away from direct heat and sunlight so that it retains its bright yellow colour and earthy flavour. Be careful not to get it on your clothes as they can stain.
